CPLHS Members Workshop –
Villages Project 04/02/2010 Members
present: Jennie Bleakley, John Beckett, Pat Rowland, Ruth Hughes, Barbara Copeland & Nigel Mills. Discussion: A recap of the purpose of the Villages Project, scope
and expected outcome was discussed. It is a work in progress project and experience has shown that when researching village
history one item of interest leads to another and it can be never ending. As a result of this the outcome of this project
may be in different forms from a website articles through to a book. We need to wait and let the research develop more before
deciding on an end product or end products. It was agreed
that it would make sense if the format and theme of each of the written histories were similar but each researcher may wish
to concentrate on different aspects of the village and this is encouraged. The use of source material needs to be acknowledged unless the researcher owns it e.g. a postcard view. If copies
of documents are included then permission needs to be sought e.g. photocopy of a Records Office document. Copyright procedure
for using CPLHS Archive photographs is being confirmed. We reminded each
other that when noting any information that may be useful don’t forget to also note the source, any reference, date
etc. Research Progress: This part of the
workshop as in previous workshops was very informative and stimulating and emphasised that we all do research at a pace which
suits us personally and that is why we enjoy local history. Ravenstown research
by Pat centres around the development and purpose of the “housing estate” built for Vickers of Barrow in the early
20th C and some of the social and technical problems encountered. Kents Bank research
by Pat is in its early stages and may focus on the people and houses and why and who built them there. Grange - over - Sands. Ruth’s work on Grange is extensive so her article concentrates on the problems of travelling
to and from Grange before the railway arrived. Allithwaite. Barbara has collected together documents, maps and photographs showing the development of Allithwaite
including the discovery in the 20th C of burial urns. The use of newspaper extracts will give the history a “people”
touch. High Hampsfield. Jennie is starting to research the
relationship between Hampsfield House and the farms and house in High Hampsfield including the different ages of the properties
in perhaps one of the most remote spots in the peninsula. Field Broughton.
Nigel has drafted a history which has many gaps yet to be researched and written up concentrating on the development of Field
Broughton. Other
Items discussed. A House History Group has formed to look at the houses in the Field Broughton and Wood Broughton villages and findings
may feed into the Villages Histories in due course. Nigel will look
at the best format for including the Village History Project on our web site using a contents list which hyperlinks to a particular
paragraph. Some hints on the use of the Internet, specific sites,
e-mail and IT in general were shared between those present. Further
Actions. Nigel is to look at incorporating plans and photographs
to the paper Pat provided on Ravenstown and see if this can be included on the website. John is to create a Bibliography for the Cartmel Peninsula to help researchers and provide the material for an introductory
paragraph or two to introduce the Villages Histories Project. Committee is asked to: consider providing Newsletters to the local Libraries to increase publicity and consider the
best and cheapest way of circulating the CLHF Bulletins. It was agreed
that by our next AGM in November 2010 we should aim to have at least 5 Village Histories ready for publication. Next Workshop to be held on 20th April 2010 at 7.30 in
Cartmel Village Hall Supper Room.
CPLHS Members Workshop Evening – Villages Project 09/09/09. Present were Members: Liz Goodwin,
Nick Mortimer, Pat Rowland & John Beckett.Committee: Barbara Copeland, Ruth Hughes & Nigel Mills Action from last workshop: A recap on the previous meeting was given
and notes were issued. The action points were addressed as follows: ·
A
list of historical sources owned by members has been drawn up and members are invited to offer their personal research and
any relevant books to be listed for the use of members. · A record of published article
to be added to the CPLHS Database for reference purposes, and as a possible income source in the future. ·
Grange
was added to the list of village histories being researched.Discussion: · Barbara gave us an outline of the Enclosures research
that Liz Fell had loaned her for this meeting. It is so full of useful detail that it was felt that members wanting to consult
it should contact Liz personally. · The Crown Hotel at Grange is to be the subject of
a “Nostalgia” item in the Westmorland Gazette and this could be followed by other articles which would give our
society some good publicity. (Nigel to send Ruth a photo of the interior of the Crown Hotel from the archive) ·
Ruth
gave a presentation with an old photograph of the Crown Hotel as the subject and this stimulated some good discussion. · Liz outlined her research into the fascinating history of Meathop Infirmary
and explained how nationally significant it was in the treatment of TB. (Nigel to send Liz any Meathop photos contained in
the archive) · An article on The history of Merlewood by John Beckett,
which was featured our Newsletter, has been published in the Holiday Property Bond Magazine , the new owners of the house.
(Nigel to send John a copy) Villages
Project Discussion: · Pat has put together a history of Ravenstown, Liz
has started Meathop concentrating on the Sanitorium, Nigel has drafted a history of Field Broughton, Barbara has material
for Allithwaite and Ruth would compile the Grange history. ·
Each
village history was discussed with informative discussion about the approach and the content. It was re-affirmed that a consistent
format was not required as each village was different and each researcher would want to approach the history slightly differently.
· It was felt that we should have in mind a publishable product, possibly
a brochure containing all the Cartmel Peninsula Villages and their History.
Outcomes: · As good progress had been made, the group decided
that each person would aim to have a draft history, of no more than 6 A4 (at size 10/12 font) by the date of the AGM. This
is on 19th November 2009. · Each group member to e-mail their history to other
members of the group prior to the AGM. · The date of the next Villages Histories Project
workshop to be decided at the AGM.
CPLHS Members Workshop Evening – Villages Project 26/06/2009. Members: Lis Fell, Liz Goodwin,
Pamela Goord, Stuart Harling, Sandra Mills, Trevor Moor, Nick Mortimer, & Pat Rowland.Committee: Barbara Copeland, Ruth Hughes, Peter
leMare & Nigel Mills. Discussion: · The purpose of the Villages Project is to encourage
research within the society and to produce as an outcome a history or histories of the villages within the CPLHS area. · A short presentation was followed by discussion on the different ways
in which this could be achieved, the content of such a history and its format. ·
Provisional
outcomes were drawn from the discussion and it was accepted that this project would evolve in ways which suit the specific
topics the members wished to focus upon.Provisional Outcomes: · The villages within our CPLHS area are those villages
situated on or to the south of the old A590 and bounded by the River Leven to the west and the River Kent to the east. · A list of historical sources owned by members and the society would
be drawn up and available for use by this project. · An index of our members specific
local history interests would be compiled for the purpose of:a, informing the Villages Project research and b, to help in answering any questions received from others via the web site and other interested parties. · As the number of villages in our area are numerous
it was agreed that we would initially work on compiling a history for the following: Allithwaite, Kents Bank, Ravenstown,
Field Broughton, Flookburgh & Meathop. ·
The
format for presenting our research will remain undecided until the project has developed further. ·
The
next meeting for the Village History group will be notified to all members present and a further invitation for others to
join would be included in the Newsletter.
