Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society

| Cartmel Peninsula in the south of Cumbria, England |
Welcome to the website for:
Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society
The
society was founded in 1996 with the objective of promoting an interest in local history within Cartmel and the surrounding
parishes, roughly the area between the Leven Estuary to the west and the Kent Estuary to the east. This objective
was to be met by: a) Promoting
Lectures b) Organising Field Excursions c) Providing Information d) Encouraging
Local History Research
These four aspects of the society are still key and drive the varied
programme of lectures, excursions and members research organised and supported by the society.

CPLHS Activities.
Research Groups.
Many individual members in the CPLHS undertake their
own personal research with the support of our society and all members benefit from this at our AGM where traditionally members
give short presentations of their particular interests.
We also have a Village Histories Group
and a developing Oral History Group which is working on several audio recordings made by a few senior
members of the Cartmel community a few years ago.
All members are welcome to attend these groups just to listen
or to add to the discussion. The meetings are publicised in our Newsletters and on the Home page of this website.
CPLHS Archive.
We are planning an official archive of source material held by CPLHS and a permanent
record of articles and essays produced and published by our members. These will be listed in the Newsletters and
this website as soon as they are available.
Lectures and Excursions.
If you have a particular interest, can recommend a speaker or have an idea for a field trip or "excursion" please
let us know.
Cartmel Peninsula Bibliography - John Beckett.
A detailed and comprehensive Bibliography has been compiled by John for use by members in their research. It lists books
of general interest and those that have village specific references helpful for our Villages Research Project. To
view please click on the link below.
